ADS Revealer is a Windows utility application which scans the target folders or discs for the presence of the ADS, looks for particular NTFS streams and if present, allows the user to export the stream content and/or delete it.
In the default installation, the interface of the application looks like this:
The Files tab shows all the available files/folders on the disc being scanned. Clicking on any file/folder, opens a dialog box where the user can select the command to be used for extracting the stream data (see below) and then decide whether or not to delete the stream.
Stream extraction:
The default command is to export the stream as a text file (with the extension.adst) in the same folder or disc.
The NTFS alternate data streams are saved in specially crafted streams in order to hide the presence of malware code. This is done by using NTFS streams with only a handful of zero bytes between the two end-of-stream markers. As a consequence, ADS files are extremely easy to locate and automatically identify as malicious, even without running any further tool.
Therefore, the ideal approach would be not to keep any ADS on the disc, as they might carry unwanted programs, instead it would be better to delete them.
Delete ADS:
The default option of the application is to display a confirmation message if the selection of “delete all” (by default, all the selected streams) or “delete all selected” (deletes only the selected ADS) is given.
The selected files are then moved to the Recycle Bin or deleted.
A more refined option is available and is to be able to delete a single stream. Select the stream to be deleted, then press the button Delete Selected.
Activation keys
Not every malware program operates with the ADS stream method.
Most malware programs are structured to avoid detection, and try to hide their presence on the disc.
Therefore, in order to locate and remove them, one must rely on some other method for their detection, in particular by using command-line utilities.
Some malware programs may store the command-line parameters that would be used for infection (for example for a worm program, a command-line parameter could be: m /uninstall).
This is what makes the program the Activation Keys very useful.
Activation keys are the binary hidden messages contained within the.ADST file, and they are read by ADS Revealer in order to automatically identify the ADS file as a malware one.
By default, a bitmask is shown to the user, which includes the bit values corresponding to each of the malware programs that are running on the system (see ‘References’ tab).
The user can then right-click on any bitmask displayed to delete that stream, and consequently also the malware.
